Senior Secondary

This final phase of their secondary journey is both challenging and exciting. It is a time when students focus on preparing for summative assessments and leaving the College to enter tertiary studies or vocational fields, traineeships and apprenticeships. At the same time, they are cultivating their talents, developing leadership skills, and learning how to establish mature, healthy relationships in their community.  

Quality Learning

It is during this phase of learning that our students commence their individual pathway to further study and/or careers. Pathways vary from person to person, however our specialist teachers and partner organisations assist students towards completing the requirements of their chosen course of study or training. Their senior secondary teachers are practiced at working alongside and instigating meaningful learning, and this is integral to the process. The bi-weekly BAC Hub sessions in the secondary Learning Resource Centre provide additional homework and assignment help, research assistance, study management advice, and exam preparation opportunities. Added to this are the weekly iLive sessions devoted to providing quality life and academic skills such as how to reference accurately, study efficiently, do taxes and implement a budget, and prepare and practice for the QCS test.

Technology in the Classroom

Every classroom on the secondary campus is digitally equipped with appropriate technology to enhance the delivery of the curriculum and meet the needs of a broad range of learning styles. With digital technology changing the way students solve problems, work and connect with each other and the world, our one-to-one laptop/tablet program gives them a solid grounding in harnessing and managing 21st century learning. The teachers, as part of a progressive professional learning community, participate in professional development that continually investigates research-based ways of enhancing student learning.

Wellbeing and Support

The wellbeing of senior students is critical at this time when they are faced with important life choices and looming dates for exams and assignments. Students are monitored closely by a pastoral care team that includes their year level coordinator, form teacher, school chaplain and class teachers. Parents are also asked to keep a close eye on their young people during this time, as the pressure of personal and external expectations can be overwhelming. 
 
The Year 11 camp and much-anticipated Year 12 Sydney trip are important in promoting strong friendships and support networks between students, senior teachers and chaplains. Personal excellence and leadership is foregrounded, including mentoring in Year 11 and school leadership positions in Year 12. Senior students are also given the opportunity to lead out in music, sports and service activities, bringing to fruition the skills and character they have been honing throughout their schooling years, and contributing to emotional wellbeing and community connectedness. 

CURRICULUM

The senior secondary school teaches in accordance with the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) to prepare students for assessments and leaving the College to enter into university studies or vocational traineeships and apprenticeships. Legislation requires students to either ‘earn or learn’ for two years following their compulsory schooling (Year 10 or 16 years of age), OR until they turn 17, OR until they complete a Queensland Certificate of Education, Senior Statement or Certificate III or IV vocational qualification. 

BAC Pathways

Towards the end of Year 10, students will select their pathway for their senior phase of schooling (Years 11 & 12). This will be based on their individual aspirations, interests and prior academic performance. Each pathway has its own defined course structure:

1. University/Tertiary

Students who wish to study further at university or another tertiary institution work towards an Overall Position (OP) by studying at least 5 OP subjects (usually starting off with 7 at the beginning of Year 11). Students may also include a university-level enrichment course to increase their competitiveness for entry to their preferred university program.

2. Mix  

Students who are unsure about which career they wish to pursue can study 5 OP subjects in order to be eligible for tertiary study, while also studying one or more non-OP or vocational subjects/courses.

3. Early Start

Students who wish to get a head start on a trade or qualification while completing their senior certificate can choose non-OP subjects at school and enrol in TAFE for qualifications relating to their chosen field, or begin a traineeship or apprenticeship.
